The Best Money Advice You’ve Ever Followed

The Best Money Advice You've Ever Followed

Lenddo asks: What's the best money advice you've ever followed?

We’ve all been there: payday comes in, and we spend our salary on things we don’t really need. We’ve mismanaged our budget for the month. Or, an unexpected emergency comes up, and we’re suddenly left with zero cash in our bank account.

While money can’t buy happiness, its proper management can certainly lessen one’s worries. Randell Tiongson and Fitz Villafuerte are two money management experts, and their blogs are quite helpful with practical tips.

But sometimes, the best advice comes from our peers. So we’ve asked friends: what’s the best money advice you’ve ever followed?

On Saving:

“Once you get your salary, 20% should immediately go to your savings.” -Kaye M, PR Assistant

“Set a target amount of savings, then deduct it immediately when you get your pay.”-Cheenee V., Copywriter

“Save your money, and then forget you’ve ever had it. Do not even touch it.”-Alex O., Dermatologist

“Try to make sure you have at least 6 months worth of your monthly expenses in the bank, so if you lose your job, you have a buffer.”-Rona B, Brand Manager

On Spending:

“Small amounts matter, so everyday spending habits can have a huge impact on one’s financial success.” -Isabel C, Marketing Assistant.

“Schedule all foreseen expenses. “ -Rick L, Assistant Manager

On Budgeting:

“It’s better to have forced savings than an expensive bag.” -Anne A, Marketing Manager

“Always pay your credit card bill in full! You do not want to go into debt. That being said, always live within your means.” -Donna, Events Planner

“Money is a result of providing value. Don’t spend money based on a non-realized promise of future income.” -Anton Diaz, blogger, OurAwesomePlanet.com

Practical Ideas to Keep Cool

Thermometer

Beat the heat!

Summer is here, and we can definitely feel it! But just because the temperature’s rising doesn’t mean your spending has to go up too. Read on for some tips on how to keep cool without having to turn up the airconditioning.

Watch What You Wear

During the summer months, wear light-colored clothing in breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen or silk. Jeans are a no-no at this time! If you need to wear stockings as part of your uniform, keep a spare set in your bag, locker or desk and wear it only in the office.

Spray Away

Fill a spray bottle with cool, chilled water and spritz yourself whenever you can. This is especially useful if you need to work outdoors.

Turn It Off!

Turn off, or even unplug, your appliances: the computer, the microwave oven, your lamps, even the TV if you can. Try putting off using your oven during the summer months too. All these generate heat that can affect your entire home. Now’s the perfect time to handwash and airdry your clothing and dishes.

Go For the Cold!

Ice candy, ice cream, halo-halo, mais con hielo—now is the perfect time to enjoy these treats. You can even make this into a part-time business for you, your kids or your family.

Make Your Own Cold Pack

Fill a clean, old sock ¾ of the way with uncooked rice. Sew the other end shut. Put in the freezer overnight. At the hottest time of the day, take it out and drape it over your neck.

Drink Lots of Water

Yes, you heard it-JUST WATER. Sodas, coffee and some teas have a diuretic effect—meaning they can actually dehydrate you. Plus, the added sugars in these drinks are not healthful at all. In the hot summer days, drinking water is the best way to cool you down.

Consider Changing Your Light Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs generate heat, so it’s best to switch to compact fluorescent bulbs. Doing so can help you save on electricity too!

Affordable Home Makeover Ideas

You may have felt the need to redecorate your home a thousand times before. Aside from time, another thing is stopping you from doing so—budget. Here’s the good news: Home makeover doesn’t always mean you need to spend a lot of money. Get creative and learn from these budget-friendly home makeover ideas!

Re-arrange and de-clutter.

This tip may require some thought as you need to plan and picture how you want your home to look like. After planning, you need to get rid of the unnecessary accessories and furniture pieces to make the re-arranging process a lot easier. Instead of throwing them away, you can sell these things in your backyard to make your home makeover more rewarding. Re-arranging the furniture can give your home an instant makeover feel.

Change light fixtures and bulbs.

Replace old light fixtures and choose one that fits the new design of your home. Poorly lit spaces can make your home look dull and boring. To enhance the atmosphere of your home, change dim and old light bulbs as well.

Repaint wall.

Use fresh and warm colors that go well with the color of your furniture. Remember to cover your furniture and decorations to avoid paint marks that could add up to your home makeover expenses.

Change carpets and drapes every now and then.

If you have been using the same carpet and curtains for the past 8 months or so, then it’s probably time to change them.  Carpets and curtains are dirt and dust reservoir, so it’s best that you change them on a regular basis. Every single time you do, you’re giving your home a new and fresh look.

Decorate your home with flowers and plants.

Plants make beautiful ornaments for your home. You can use them as a centerpiece, or as a decor that would make empty corners look more interesting.

Repair dripping faucets.

You may have noticed that water is seeping out of your bathroom faucet for days. Don’t wait any longer to fix them as further damages can be more costly. Remember, dripping faucets mean more expensive water bill.

It’s important that you take care of your home as it is your most valuable asset. It’s where you spend most of your time with your family and friends.
